The site runs on a subscription model to pay for staff, servers, etc. Basic members have access to most features, some limited.
Plenty of popular sites are free, have staff and infrastructure, and still make plenty of money in the process. Facebook, instagram, TikTok, X, and tons of others. Chess.com is valued at over 1 billion dollars and the founders are worth over 50 millions. They don’t need to charge money, and there are plenty of ways to make money without charging users. I was fine with chess.com delivering ads transparently; however, when they started interrupting chess play to force me to watch full screens ads, that’s the line for me. Not even the sites listed above resort to that nonsense. I will continue to call this out until changes are reverted.

Yeah it's because all of those sites, you are the product. You are freely giving them information about yourself which they are building a profile on and selling to whoever wants it. And many of the mobile apps allow them to track your every move and in some cases log everything you do even outside the app.
