You said you’d choose video games over chess. I think you do not know what “passion” means.

Fischer was sick.  Smyslov was sicker

lol, I don't choose it over chess, but if I had to pick one to be my career option, definitely video games cause they earn much more, are a bit more fun than chess, you can socialize with others more than in chess, you can make content successfully, and more. I know what passion means, and both are my passions. I wish to excel at both preferably, but depending on the circumstances, I may choose one or the other.

It’s not passion if you choose money over it.

So if you like doing something, you shouldn't try to earn money from it. Thanks.

No. If you truly love something, you will do it no matter how much money you earn. Don't you say you have an A in English? More proof North American schools are broken.

Who cares about what title you get?

It's not about how you are recognized by a group of people in suits with an unfair rating system, it's about what you learn and experience in the process of becoming a good chess player. That's why people don't quit chess just because they aren't the greatest chess player that has ever lived.

You should quit it if after 10 years you are flat or barely 1800.

If one truly loves the game, they won’t.

Well I’ve been playing for a year, and I’m still at 700. I doubt I’ll ever be even over 1000, but I love the game so I keep playing. I don’t think you should stop playing just because you aren’t improving. If you are having fun, that is all that matters.

If they play for fun. then sure, 100%

Why would you not play something for fun?

You can play it to be top at it, attain a title, start a chess career, become a chess coach, and many more. Sure, it is still fun, just not 100%.

If chess weren’t fun to the top GMs, they wouldn’t be GMs. Getting a title is simply an achievement for your dedication and skill.

Did I say it wasn't fun? No I said it wasn't 100% fun.

Why wouldn’t chess be 100% fun?

Hikaru recently said, on his stream, that money plays a role in what tournaments he decides to enter or not.

Specifically: how much money he might stand to earn, compared to how much money he's currently making as a streamer.

He said, when it comes to money between OTB chess tournaments and streaming, "there's no comparison". He currently makes considerably more as a streamer than he could from playing OTB.

He said, "If they start having tournaments with million-dollar prize funds, then it would be a different story."

But he noted how, in the current Women's US Chess Championship, none of the top players, in interviews, identify as professional chess players - because they simply aren't being paid enough to be able to play chess full time.

He said the governing bodies of chess have done a poor job of marketing chess and drawing in bigger sponsors to support the players, and until that changes, his participation in OTB tournaments is likely to be minimal.

i always found this to be a bizarre position. You waste countless hours to become one of the best players in the world in an activity that no one in their right mind would do for monetary gain, but you suddenly find making a few more bucks streaming more personally enjoyable than what you worked for your whole life? Naka is as loaded as any chess player can realistically hope to be.

I find the Carlsen trauma explanation more believable. XD. Kasparov left for politics, but at least that at least resembles a calling more.

You make a good point.

Though, I'm not convinced that Nakamura is traumatized by Carlsen. A lot of players think Hikaru is scared of Magnus, but I don't think that's true at all.

I think, mostly, Nakamura is frustrated. In post-game interviews, he rarely attributes Carlsen's victories to Carlsen - Nakamura almost always blames himself.

He usually feels that he gets decent positions, then gets careless and lets the game slide away.

It's never "Carlsen outplayed me". It's almost always, "I was doing good, then I screwed it up. If I'd just played this, or this, my position would've been fine ..."

For me, I can play for fun completely, not caring about my loses and wins, playing horrible but fun openings, sacrificing material for fun, and setting up positions that are fun.

Lol, I think we mean two different things.

I am saying if it fully fun, don’t play it.

I think you are saying something else…
