Why is the community so toxic?

I feel like the chess.com community is very toxic and homophobic. I recently talked to an openly homophobic person and they said that some homosexual people in their class did weird things. Agreed, they may be doing wrong things, but so do straight cis people. Why do homos get called out but not the straights? And the bullying or teasing. Sometimes people just want to show something they like when others start attacking them for that. And then they get bullied worse when they retaliate. Sure, they might be teasing but sometimes people go too far.
I do know that this is a sensitive and controversial topic, but I did feel the need to call it out, considering how serious it has started to become, and how utterly ignorant and dumb people are. Sorry people, you know who you are, and I hope you fall off a cliff.
You're right, sometimes people go too far. I wasn't far apart from your opinion, until the last sentence.
honey, don't get me wrong.. i know you guys might be too sensitive but why do you feel you need to disclose your sexual preferences in a chess forum?
besides, there are people from all over the world here, all living in different cultures.. don't expose yourself and expect acceptance. you'd only hurt yourself this way <3

The community is toxic because the moderators allow it to be toxic. This site values "free speech" over civility and even chess

Thank you for wisely editing your last sentence out of the original post. It is an improvement. (See #5)

Yet they ban any political speech, but make political messages of their own:

The sentence fell off a cliff

I'm sorry, I'm not saying I'm homosexual or anything, just why do you have to be hateful to people who are?

Expose myself how-

You're defining the community by a few people.
You may have come across more homophobia (although I would like to know what exactly you define as homophobia, as I've seen it used to varying degrees) than most people, and that sucks. From what I've seen though, the community as a majority is either supportive or neutral, and those that disagree with certain things keep their opinions to themselves.
