Will OTB chess be relevant in 100 years?

Yeah, but there will probably always be new ways of countering that cheating.

It's a never ending battle, one side is always ahead of the other. No one can tell which side will be ahead given a time.

Well, I read somewhere  recently (maybe even somewhere in these forums, even) that the 1st person who will reach an age of 200 years has already been born.

Please tell me this is some religious bullshit.

I predict that chess will have tons of cheating, but no more than we do now.  There would still be people striving to achieve greatness in chess without cheating.  A better question would be if there would still be funding for such events in the future.

Honestly, chess isn't very important to the vast majority of the population.  I think it's better to ponder other things.  Will music be composed by computers?  Will the next Leonardo be Windows 2113?  Will computers be able to examine current trends, plus analyze previous literature, and do all of the writing, publishing, and editing?  Will an engineer just be someone who is pushes the start button?

The world will end another 47 times according to some other ancient calander in 100 years.

DrSpudnik

The world was supposed to end in 2012. And we all know how disappointing that was.

TheBigDecline

People may switch to Go. Or the newest iteration of Brothel Simulator 4D.

I've read it was predicted in 2012 and 2011, then remember Y2k in 2000? When that didn't happen, people predicted the end on April 6, and after that fail, May 5. Since forever there were fears of nuclear holocausts: between 1967 and these days. But my favorite I read about was coined the great disappointment [in 1844] - any 2013 New York Giants fans could relate. Romans thought the world would end before "jesus" was around. Twice.

So it's been predicted about hundred times. According to wikipedia, there's another 12 coming up. I'm hoping for 10 to the hundreth, which buys us time to try and solve this damn game.

The game will probaly still be played OTB in a hundred years; maybe with some sort of minor enhancements to keep the game sharp and relevant to the era.

WorldChamp1012

I enjoy OTB chess more, I guess I'm just a old school!

yes

at the rate at which certain technologies are being disseminated through the population, I think it's plausible that at some point in the future you will only play standard chess with people who you love and trust. and no one else.

the only way around this is if sufficient counter-tech is developed quickly enough. this always comes a little after the fact though no?

or everyone might be forced to start playing seirawan chess. one of it's advantages is that engines won't be able to handle that at all for a long long time.

RustInTime

Sooner than that we'll invent brainplugs that detect if we are actually thinking or not. And what! ..

So no worries.

Wut.
