Win 1 Free Year of Chess Mentor!

So... one thing that Chess.com needs is a welcome video - one that explains what the site is about, how to get around, etc. Something between 2 and 3 minutes long. I'm not asking for a complete video, but I am asking for written script submissions! Here's the deal: submit just a written script for a Welcome to Chess.com video and if I choose it, I'll give you a 1 year Chess Mentor subscription (or if two people do it together - both will get it! [up to 3 memberships]). Submissions are due by Friday! I'll pick the winner on Saturday.

What should it include? The Who/What/When/Why/How of Chess.com.

Why does Chess.com exist? What can you do here? How do you do it? Who should join?

Basically, get them excited about what is here, show them how to use some of it, and then encourage them to signup!

Feel free to make multiple submissions, edits, ideas, or whatever you want. I'll even give feedback on submissions.

Serious submissions only please - no joke posts [i'll delete them] :)

Here are some ideas (good and bad):

Sounds like fun, will be interesting to see what people come up with. Its a worthy prize and I'd certainly take a swing at this if I had more time.

In my head I'm envisaging some sort of bizarre love-child of the tactics-trainer and the rolling frontend from games like Suikoden Tactics. With some text, obviously!

Would you get extra credit if your script came with a demo sequence or two? Sometimes people who swear they have no free time suddenly get a visit of the muse Boredom and her steed Insomnia...

Welcome to chess.com.

In this website we have two main ways of playing chess.

The first one, called "online chess" is similar to correspondance chess i.e. players are not connected at the same time and move at a slow pace like one move a day.

The second one, called "live chess" is more like blitz or On the Board chess, both players are connected at the same time and finish the game during their connection. The games there most likely will last from 5 minutes to an hour.

You may also play chess against the computer and team vote games.

We also have a lot of forum activities, groups and tournaments.

You may access to chess games by clicking on the play menu on the menubar which is located on the topleft of this page.

Most part of the website is free but by registering to premium membership, you will have access to statistics, tournament managing and plenty of cool new features.

Furthermore this helps us making chess.com even better.

Have fun and Welcome!

Welcome! My name's Kohai and this is my site. I hope it will be yours, too! chess.com is a place where people from all over the world come together to play chess, learn about the game, and just hang out.

Let me tell you a little bit about getting around.

On the top menu, there's a "Play" button. As we mouse over it, more options appear. "Live Chess" lets you play a game in one sitting, now! "Online Chess" lets you play at a more relaxed pace, such as one move per day.

If you're trying to improve your game--or figure out how to play-- then "Read" and "Learn" are the buttons for you. They contain helpful articles, tactics problems, and online courses designed to make you a better player.

Don't forget to check out the "Forums". They're your chance to meet fellow players--like me! We can talk about your games, how the site works, or just be silly.

Join us now by clicking on the "Register" link. It's free, and soon someone will invite you to a game and answer all of your questions.

Good luck! I'll see you around the site. :)

(I left a not-so-subtle hint as to who would make a great promoter. Hint: she already shows off her chess.com shirt and has her partner plug the site on his radio show!)

But in any event, I hope it will be a real member and not a model. :)

If you are looking everything about chess then Chess.com is the place to be!

Getting around the site is simple, just few clicks on the top menu.

In the play section you can challenge other people in online chess which is turn based and takes longer time to finish and in live chess where you can get right on it and play quick, blitz and long chess! In both online and live chess you get a ranking and know what members to play agaist. There is other ways to play chess too. There's tournaments (will there be live chess tournaments? it would be awesome!) where you battle through many people to be a winner and there's vote chess  where you match up with chess players and play against an other team.

If you need to sharp up your skills there's plenty of features in the learn section. With the game explorer you can look your old games and watch what you did wrong. It also shows what opening it is, how popular a move is and which side usually wins the game after you make the move. The Tactics Trainer is where you can play puzzles and it helps you to see many moves forward. The daily puzzle is one option too to help raise you tactic skills. The Chess Mentor, which you need to buy, helps you to think like a grandmaster in a game and tells why some moves are bad. Plus there's alot of articles about chess!

There are friendly members young to old of which you can interact in the forums, where people post their own puzzles, games and thougts about chess. You can show your own pictures to other players and make chess groups to hang with the other members who got same intrests.

In chess.com there's complete with google maps to search coaches and chess clubs in your local area.

Everything doesn't have to be serious. In the fun section you can try a endless quiz, watch trophies and videos and read chess quotes and be part of many surveys.

Chess.com is made by a small and hardworking group and they're trying to do chess.com as good as possible.

By joining the site you are able to use most of the features on the site and by buying the premium membership you get all of them.

Erik, the founder of chess.com had a vision when he purchased the domain name back in 2005 - to create the premier chess site on the web. A lofty goal that most would agree is well on the way to being achieved. In just a little over a year since the official launch chess.com has become the largest and fastest growing chess community in existence. Every day hundreds (?) of players make  this site their primary online chess home.

Chess.com is a state of the art example of the new generation of niche social networking sites.Unlike Myspace and Facebook, there is a common ground that brings everyone together. Many members use chess.com as their exclusive website to maintain a blog and base their personal homepage.

Here you will find news and articles, lessons and training tools, quizzes and puzzles, videos and vote chess, (takes a deep breath) forums, groups, blogs, game explorers and much, much more!

From absolute beginners to Grandmasters, chess.com has and caters for players of all levels. Beginner? Then you can learn the rules, find a coach and make use of chess.com's various learning aids such as the Tactics Trainer and Chessopedia. Experienced? You'll have no problems finding opponents who match your skill level and will gain access to sophisticated study tools that can help you continue to improve.

It's very easy to find your way around the site by using the navigation bar at the top of every page. Just hover over a heading and it will display a list of features which you can choose from. Or click on the heading itself and you will be taken to this categories homepage.

For example, if you hover over the PLAY heading on the far left, a list of various playing formats will drop down:

Like to play at your own pace with no time pressure? Then click on Online Chess to enjoy unlimited turn-based games in which each player receives one day or more per move. Select the tournament option just below to enter events in the same format.

Prefer a traditional style game with a ticking clock?  Play real time chess in chesscom's LIVE browser based interface with no downlaods!

Think you have what it takes to beat a computer at chess? Hit Against the Computer to match your wits against its silicon brain and find out!

Would you like to join a team and cast your vote on what moves to play in a game against another team or strong individual? Then Vote Chess is for you!

Each heading works in the same way. Every one full of high quality features to provide unlimited enjoyment.

On the far right of the navigation bar is 'MY HOME'. This is the portal to your homepage, or you can hover (roll?) over it to display a list of links to everything to do with your account. The top most option 'online chess' is the one to follow to start a new game.To customize your homepage, write a profile or adjust your preferences go to 'account' at the bottom of the list. Additionally a control panel is provided on the right hand side of your home page with the same options and more. As you navigate your way around the site this panel changes and is often the the place to look to find all the different functions available for the area you're in.

At the bottom of every page is a further section of handy links. From FAQs to a list of site features to the means to contact administrators and gain assistance. This is a very useful resource for new members and worth browsing.

Now you are ready to get started. After registering, why not duck into the forums and introduce yourself to the friendly community? There are a wealth of regulars here who would be happy to say hello and answer any questions you might have. Also, new members will be automatically assigned a greeter and an unrated game against them will begin. You can find this game on your home page or in the alerts panel on the upper right. If you enter the game and make a move, they will be along shortly to play with you and give you site help if needed.

So sign up now! After a quick and easy registration process you can start enjoying the great features, interact in a safe and friendly environment, and of course - play chess!
