It's only needed for Life Review as it uses pictures to generate the reviews.

It’s just for life review, a funny little thing to make memes, or whatever.
I doubt Chess.com actually use those pictures for anything.
Besides, people are going to take pictures of random things, not themselves

Seems like a lot of people do not approve of that... (I don't either)
I tried with a random picture, just for laughs, and it really isn't worth it.
The trick is that I had to allow chess.com to access my phone camera.
So I really do not see any other purpose than getting access to the camera, so if you fiddle with this, make sure to remove the camera access after trying it (but again, it is not worth it)!
