Sure, the king can checkmate via discovered check but not directly, it's not really the same thing though, and I don't think it was the question that @laurent3792chees was asking. I think he was asking if it can checkmate directly and I think it was meant to be a joke anyway.

Anyway, I don't want this to be a big argument so I don't care if you're right or I'm right, I'll leave it there. k bye Have a good day

I hope it was a joke question indeed. But some people are so completely stupid .....

@tobstar123

The checkmate sign is always written as part of the last move rather than an addendum, which seems to support @Arisktotle's view.

Which piece would you say checkmates here?

can a king checkmate a king

Short answer: Online? No. Over the board? Yes.

Long answer, If you're playing over the board chess and you come into a position where your opponent's king is staring down your king with no other pieces left on the board, you can wait for your opponent's king to slowly decompose over the course of 50 to 100 years, however if the piece is not made out of wood, waiting about a few centuries should do the trick, occasionally you can quickly switch out your piece for a new piece without them noticing, after some time has passed you should remain the victor with the board somewhat intact. Hope this helps!

None, as you cannot prove that Black's last move was ...d7-d5.

It can't checkmate because the two kings can't check-mate eachother
