A matter of technique....

R vs B is a draw, we all know that, right?

But can you do it?

Just a little survey, Black has 2 possible moves, which one will you play?

Please, no explanations yet, just say your move...

YuvalW

Kc8... the a8 corner is the one to go to...

that isn't legal. Kc8 is correct.

rooperi

2 for Kc8, so far...

Kacparov

Kc8 for me too

rooperi

Cool! and everybody's correct, of course.

Who wants to say why?

Kacparov

because Ke8 loses

Loomis

1. ... Ke8 2. Ke6 and since 2. ... Kf8 loses the bishop, black has to move the bishop and you have to be careful where you move it to, for example, 2. ... Bh4 3. Rh7 attacks the bishop and threatens mate. 2. ... Be3 3. Rd3 Bf4 Rf3 seems to deprive the bishop of any safe squares.

So it looks like 1. ... Ke8 runs into big tactical problems quickly.

What about this position?:

Kacparov

won for white?

Dragec

Ke8.

Heading for a corner opposite of bishop's color.

rooperi

No, here Black has to play Ke8 for the draw.

So far, only Boring304 has made reference to the fact that there is a right and a wrong corner.....

[and now dragec]
