Are there any books on endgames for players of my level? (1200-1400)

Silman’s endgame course is for all levels.

I use silmans endgame course. It’s the only endgame book I have, besides the opening books where they comment a bit on endgames.

The book by Ludek Pachman on practical endgames is great. I read it in Portuguese. Apparently never translated to English.

No. There are absolutely no endgame books designed for the majority of chess players. Absolutely none.

Hi, I have now 2 endgame books, unfortunattly no time for studies.

1. For theoretical endgames (Silman Endgame course)

Situations which are forced=lost, won, draw.

2. For endgame technique (Endgame strategy by schereschevsky)

Explains how to play not forced endgames.

an international master recommended me this books, and if absorbed properly are more than enough until you reach master level.

If he can't get the Ludek Pachman manual on endgames in a language he can read, next stop could be the Paul Keres manual.

The Keres book is very good. The Irving Chernev Capablanca's Best Chess Endings is a good way to learn endings in the context of games.

Fundamental Chess Endings by Müller and Lamprecht is both a reference and a readable book. Karsten Müller is an endgame expert and this book is a bible!!

The Ludek Pachman manual, is a book one can read from cover to cover. I did it (in Portuguese) and it is not too hard to do, it is amazingly well written having in mind the player from 1400 to 2000 Elo. The manual by Paul Keres (I have it in Spanish) is already too big to do so and the manual Fundamental Chess Endings by Müller and Lamprecht is even bigger, not suitable to go from page 1 to 500 or something. I would try to get the Pachman's manual. Maybe it is out of print in English but can be bought from an old book shop.

Apparently it is still selling on Amazon:

Let me say that after reading the Ludek Pachman manual on endgames I changed my style of play. When I see I can't get a safe advantage after the opening I don't mind to exchange pieces and simplify the position. This way I avoid a boring middle game of manoeuvering because after reading the book I started discovering little by little that most of the amateurs play the endgame at a level below their level in the opening and middle-game.

ok, i might check out that book

Might be worth checking out Gerald Abrahams 'Chess', (1975. orig ed. 1948), Chapter 2, 'The elementary endgame', and chapter 6, 'some resources and refinements in the endgame'. If I ever get to study them properly (time being an issue), maybe I won't loose so many endgames.  happy.png
