Actually, black can play better than that! Re4 is white's best move, but R8xe4 is NOT black's best move! Black could play Re6, thus delaying the checkmate. So the puzzle should be following:

Wow, good call. I was going to say 'You missed the obvious 1...Rxg2+, delaying mate one more move,' but I don't think that it does. After 2.Qxg2 Re6, white can now just play 3.Rxe6, and I am pretty sure white can still force mate in seven.

That's a good point, I didn't really think of 1...Rxg2+. But I'm not sure if it really does delay the mate, I could only think of the continuation 2.Kxg2 Kf8 (else white could play Rxe8#, and now Rxe8+ would lead to a delayed mate after 3...Kxe8) 3.Qxg5 Re6, and then it would be a kinda equal situation as before... But I'm not really sure if black could play better there, and then delay the mate.
