Endgame study for Pion15
Why not take the pawn? .... Ah, found it. Stalemate in the corner, seen that one before, ... 7. Kf6 .... If I am not mistaken I can still play on, for a minute I was afraid to have to start over. ...
You are right, i already made that move. In that case i really have to start over. I take some time to try something.
1. Kc6 Kb3
2. Kxc7 Kxc4
3. Kc6!
I can't seem to avoid stalemate in the corner. I have to win a pace somewhere. I might have a solution, but I am not really sure. In the original line:
1. Kb4 Kb2
2. c5 Kc2
3. Kc4 c6
4. Kd4 Kb3
5. Ke5 Kc4
6. Kf6 Kd5
7. Kf7
9. Kf6 Black resigns.
The key to this problem is losing a tempo with a king triangulation at the right moment. In most problems requiring a triangulation, it comes at the beginning. But in this problem, the White king has to pause in his march to the kingside to triangulate and lose a tempo, giving Black the move.
This time I thought you were going to solve it on the first try, until one move by Black threw you off track.
Yes, that one move got me unbalanced yesterday. So, I took a step back to look carefully again, cause it was clear to me that starting with Kb4 and up to move 6 was the only way, but that triangle wasn't that easy to see for me. I am glad I found it, now I have to practice to see these kind of moves beforehand. .... Very nice once again : )
In the task about consecutive "only" moves, I should tell you I don't have a solution, because 11 half-moves is the most I have gotten so far. If you want to work on it, I'll give you a position with a smaller number that may give you some ideas.
In the position below, how many half-moves will occur before either player has more than one move to preserve a draw?
White to play and draw.
I do have a few questions before i work on this:
'only moves' are the moves when no other move is possible, right?
can you define 'half-moves?
I play with white to maintain a draw, are the moves for black meant to be winning moves?
"Only" move is when only one move holds the draw and all other moves lose. At the start White has only one move to draw. Then Black can draw, but has only one move that works. Then White has only one move to draw. Then Black has only one move to draw, etc. A half-move is a move by either player. One game move is a half-move by White followed by a half-move by Black.
4. Kd4 Kb3
