Well, you could trap the king in the corner
like this:Forced checkmate with bishop and knight vs. king?
I know, cxue2010, but what if they don't want to, so they avoid it. That's why I asked How to force the checkmate.
In that wiki article that's the first time I've heard of Deletang's triangles, these are great. I tried to learn this endgame a few times from a book in the past and it never stuck. Once I suddenly started noticing these boxes it was much easier, you just had to slowly make them smaller, mostly with king moves, while when the bishop or knight did have to move, it wasn't so mysterious or strange, but simply making a smaller box. Good link.
I am aware of two basic methods of doing this mate, one is the triangles and the " W " method. I use the latter as I understand it better and its fewer moves than the triangles. The best explanation I have seen for how to do this is in the book : The Game of Chess by Tarrasch . Are there other methods I am perhaps unaware of ? Which do you use ? In the Tarrasch book he teaches the W method btw.
With computer chess technology or PSP2/3 chess or (etc.), practicing such an end game should be rather easy regardless the level of play. I feel that the king and bishop can cut off the king's ecsape while the knight re-enforces such whether the corner square is the bishop's color or not. This ending must be practiced rather than explained. One must learn through experience which corner is easiest for the king & bishop & occasional knight involvement to control.
I thought it has to happen in the corner square of the bishop's color...
It does, ofcourse. However, the defender can screw up and get mated on the way to the " correct corner ".
What an excellent article, thank you for posting it.
This ending is incredibly rare in real play. Has anyone here actually had to use this technique over the board? (or for that matter in turn based chess)?
Yup....Im doing it right now. I knew it COULD be done, but I just couldnt remember how. The last time I did it was when I played my brother when we were both about 12 years old. We didnt know the 50 move rule so I chased him around the board for an hour or so before I finally got him lol!
So when it came up again I (25 years later!) I thought....wow....I wonder how to FORCE that damm check mate. So I did a search. Thanks guys! Btw, if you want to see it played out, its vs DAYBEDOE
Could someone tell me how to force a checkmate with only a bishop, knight and a king vs. a king?
