Yes, Magnus Carlson would definitely ask people how to checkmate with queen.

When you checkmate with king and queen, try to keep your queen in a L-shape with your opponents king.

That's makes checkmating extremely awkward.

In that example you have the Black king walking directly to a1, but he doesn't have to.

If you play the "knight opposition" with your queen the opponent's king has an adjacent square that is also a knight's move away but doesn't get any nearer the corner you have in mind for him, e.g. move 4B in the following example. For someone who has difficulty mating in KQnK and just follows the advice to keep the queen a knight's move away from his opponent's king, that could lead to a failure such as the one shown.

The quickest way to mate from most positions is to sandwich the opposing king between your pieces, so a1 would be the wrong place to push him. Rather than 1.Qd7 the obvious move would be 1.Qa4 so the opponent's king is between the ranks and files of your pieces.

You also don't need him in a corner because there are mates anywhere at the edge and you don't need to wait until you have him at an edge to get your king moving. If you're placing your queen a knight's move away and he moves between squares that are a knight's move away (as SF15 does until move 6 in the variation shown) you simply bring in your king.
