@ olc, it really does though. Â The only time you're going to find someone playing out an endgame like this is if you're *incredibly* close to running out of time and he hopes you'll flag first. Â Ergo knowing how to get the mate in as few moves as possible (and thus as fast as possible) is incredibly relevent.

Also, black plays terribly in your example, and white would do considerably better if he tried to take the opposition instead of moving directly in-front of the black king.
