Can someone tell me if it is possible to checkmate with a rook and a king, if the opponent only has their king left?

Please don't ask questions in the forum about you current games

 (i am playing with dmk444, and i am the one with the rook)

 But I don't mind, as this endgame is *really* common, and easy.

Sorry Mysterix,  I more wanted to know if it were just possible to force a mate with that material, not a solution or anything.

And yeah, Maradonna i've since found this is a common ending but truely never had it before. Most of my games are won or lost with much more material, or with a single pawn that gets promoted.

Use the rook to corral the king and make it so his only moves are toward the edge of the board.  Each time he moves make the box smaller.  When he gets to the edge use your king to block his escape so your rook can deliver the checkmate.  Do not put him in check untill it is checkmate, because that's the only way he can slip out.
