Are there any “rules” that should be applied or followed for an efficient win when you have a king, queen versus just a king? What’s the best way to avoid an accidental stalemate? Thanks.

Loustule,  its pretty simple. you can refer to silman's complete endgame course . there are various ways . however the simple one is you just need to push the opponent king slowly into a corner by cutting off files through the use of your queen and  when opponent king is about to reach the last rank move queen cautiously to avoid stalemate. you can refer to the aforementioned book , it will be of help . Although I don't use the above method as its a bit more time consuming, however it is simple and as you require the rules based method, its a very nice one to start with .

There are quite a few youtube videos on the subject too . you can watch them .

Thanks

Thanks. I’ve done it many times but was just wondering if there are any “standard principles “. Thanks again.

Use the queen to push the king into a corner so you arrive at a setup like queen on e7, enemy king on h8 for example. Then the king can do nothing but move from h8-g8-h8 forever and you then bring your king up to f6 or g6 or h6 and give mate with the queen on g7.

LouStule, if you hover your mouse over 'Learn' right here on chess.com and select Drills and Checkmates, you can play through many different checkmates including K&Q v. K plus while you're going through it there is a button you can click for 'Best Move' to become familiar with them.

Thanks you Guys!

I usually use this one failsafe rule, especially when short on time: Move the queen as close to the enemy king as you can provided that the queen is at least a "knight's move away" from it. Once it's a knight's move away from the king trapped in any corner, repeatedly move your king closer. This way, no matter what, you won't stalemate the enemy king, and you can always deliver checkmate.

You better add one square, that is a "knight's move away" PLUS one square:
