2000 elo, what's next?

So what do people do after reaching 2000 elo? Do people go for 2200?

I don't know what to do.. after climbing back to 2000 elo, i don't really think pursuing 2200 is really what i should strive for. Also i think i'm almost at the point of plateauing.. I either go up maybe 50elo? or drop back to 1800/1900...

Kinda lost as to how to really improve at the game...

I play very basic openings such as Centre Game/Italian..

I know some basic counters against Queen's gambit/ King's gambit/Ruy Lopez...

Don't know what to do...

And FYI i'm a 20/30+ adult with a stressful auditing (accountant) job now so going for CM/IM irl maybe out of reach for me...

The next is either 2100 or 2200 and you should do mostly opening prep. I know you won’t like it but after mastering tactics, defensive, offensive, and positional play opening prep is mostly the things that you should be doing. But most likely you are not a master at positional so master it first before opening prep

First of all, congrats on your 2000+ rating milestone!

I'd enjoy your accomplishment for a few days and then I'd start working on something else and turn that into fun. Maybe try for a new puzzle rush record, or maybe try working on some endgames, or reading a new chess book. As long as you are doing something chess-related, it will usually help.

Either

A) Keep playing and strive for 2100. This means getting stronger at both tactics and positional play. There are opportunities that you are currently missing in your games - otherwise you'd be able to climb higher. Analyze your games to help spot these ideas, and try to learn what you can from them.

or

B) Keep playing and start experimenting with other openings and defenses. This will probably mean more losses and rating drops in the short term, as you'll be exploring unfamiliar structures and ideas - but in the long run, the experience will help you discover new concepts and make you a stronger player as a result. It can also help keep things fresh and interesting.
