Please help me win this endgame!
1.g5 is stupid- Black will just move the king back and forth without altering the pawn structure.
White has to plant a pawn at f6 to win, and Black can't prevent this (an eventual 1...f5 is answered by g4-g5).
So, 1,Kd5 is the only serious move, and Black apparently can't defend to the simple plan of bringing the king to e7/e8, and pushing f4-f5. There is only one detail: after a pawn swap at f5 white must have the opposition- but this is rather easy to arrange, the corresponding squares are e8/g7 and e7/g8.
I am glad to have an IM explain the position in detail. This all makes sense! I will try it out soon. Thank you, Mr. Frendzas!
I tried it partly on my own, partly from the computer feedback I got if I blundered or made a mistake, although I kept playing through my inaccuracies and eventually I won. My basic idea was to approach black's pawns at the same time as I tried to draw their king away, then when I finally got the black king far enough I took the f7 pawn from behind/above. But even after having taken both of black pawns, and having promoted my g-pawn, it was hard to drive the king to the edge and give mate. Of course, I'm just a beginner so it might just be me. What I was sure of was that I had to target black's f7 pawn first and, when it came to my own pawns, support first pawn with pawn and king then leave the supporting pawn behind and keep going pawn and king together, letting the black king deal with my forgotten pawn. All this may be wrong, or too simple to others, though, but as the OP wanted "human" feedback, I thought I'd give mine. I hope it helps in some way.
I think I got it
