Imagine this: You and your opponent are having a pawn race. You would both promote, except your pawn queens first with check! So how do you stop your opponent's pawn from queening? The answer is simple: force the opponent's king in front of the pawn so there is no threat of promotion and use that tempo to bring your king in. Keep doing this until the pawn is captured.
