I think White needs to not check and simply sit on the 7th rank and get his King to e6. If he can snap off the pawn at E7, you would have a R v R ending with a draw but I might be mistaken. Have you put the position into an endgame table base?

Yes... after 2.e6+ it's is something ridicules like mate #25. I'm thinking Silman didn't see 2.e6+
