Struggling in Queen End Games

Does anyone have general principles that I can apply in a Queen end game? I lost a game where it was just kings and queens and I was up 2 pawns. I'm specifically looking for general principles, if you know any. Obviously, calculation is always required at some point, but I'm wondering if the reason my calculations are bad is because my principles are bad.

For example, I know a good principle is "Be careful of putting your Queen or King on a skew-able square and the king is more than 1 space away and cannot protect your Queen."

But what are the others here? Should I just keep my king as tucked away as possible? The situation I've run into more than once is that the enemy king remains in a tucked away place, but my king does not have that luxury because I have an additional pawn. Meaning, I must try to trade queens or advance my pawn because the opponent is simply playing for a draw or trying to flag me.

Do you guys try to promote your pawn when enemy queen is on the board? or do you just do endless tactics until you finally trade queens then promote?

I'm also have a huge problem with pattern recognition. I mean, I can foresee maybe 3 consecutive checks, but man is it difficult. It seems like 1 single move is fine, but then 4 enemy checks later and I lose a pawn or there's a mate or a perpetual.
