Position #1

Troll your engines with this!

White to play and win

The goal of this thread is to post positions that either engines can't solve or that are very difficult for engines to solve.

That looks like one of those "engine testing" challenges, especially created for engines. Humans kill the pain on those with Oxycodonewink. White can easily draw though with 1. Nxb6 cxb6 2. Qxf8 Qxf8 3. Rxf8 Rxf8 4. Ng2 but it is unclear how he could win. Not completely impossible it appears.

Ah I figured it out! After 4. Ng2 , white runs his king to f2 and mates with Rg3! Solved!

Engines should be able to find that but it might take some or a lot of time!

Like I said it was the engine that played it

For the most part you solved it but not your engine, or perhaps a combination of you and your engine, and what happens after Black plays 3...Kxf4? or 3...Kxh4?

Unless I'm missing something it looks like black is completely lost in your position without any compensation.

How is black lost?

How is black lost?

White has an overwhelming material advantage being a piece up, and black has no way (that I can see) to compensate for that.

I'm going to put in this position again. How is black a piece down?

I solved it as I saw all the moves and had all the ideas. Used the engine in the aftermath only to verify my moves. There are always sidelines but endgame studies are solved by providing the main lines. Human solvers and judges are not interested in sidelines with high plus scores which win by simply strong game play. For instance, there are already 3 easily winning moves after 3. .. Kxf4 and even more after the next black move. By study standards, that is where the solution stops!
