Tips and rules for good endgames

I am terrible at endgames and need some help with it. I mean I am fine with checkmating and making sure in a won position I don't stalemate. But I need help with the pawn in the endgames I am terrible with collecting the opponent's loose pawns defending my own pawn and stopping past pawns. I usually 'start' the endge with 1 or 2 pawns but often loose that advantage. What are some tips or rules I should follow to make sure this doesn't happen.

Silman's Complete endgame Course is a great chess book and you can find all the answers inside of it.
