Why resign a game?

You know what?

I had K+Q against a player rated over 2400 who had only a K.  But to my surprise my opponent continued to play on and on and only resigned just before I was to checkmate his K.

And??

And this shows an utter lack of respect for both the game AND the opponent. Why not be mated if you are going to play such ridiculous endings ?  I mean why resign one move before mate but not 2 moves, or 3 moves before mate ? Such people have no class at all and deserve all the scorn they receive from the chess community.

Yes I agree Reb, why resign 3, 4 or 5 moves before being mated...in fact why resign 10, 11 or 12 moves before mate...even 21,22,23 moves before being mated...the gall of such people, IN FACT WHY RESIGN AT ALL!!??  All players should just never resign!  And if they do resign they have no class at all and deserve all the scorn from pompous aggrogant twits who try and decide how other people should play and behave!  I'm with you Reb!  Yeah! You tell em!Laughing

I agree. It's about respect; for your opponent, for yourself and for the game.

Suggo, all I can say is that you are obviously NOT a serious chess player and with your attitude are not likely ever to be. An australian kicked out of the australian group pretty much says it all. Do you have any friends in real life ? Somehow, I doubt it.

Suggo

Wait I have reread it...did you mean he SHOULD have resigned earlier??  Yes of course now I get you, the lack of respect was for resigning so close to the end ahhhh.  Makes me think, I have resigned games where I thought I probably wouldn't win, but I may have only been 1,2 or 3 moves away from being checkmated and not realised it....OMG, I deserve all that scorn and I didn't even know I did!!!  I think that means that I should have resigned earlier, but even then I won't be sure that I'm not just 1, 2 or 3 moves from checkmate...oh dear, this means we should all resign even earlier...maybe inside the first ten moves to be safe from all that scorn!  Wait I have it!  When I am playing black, as soon as white moves his first move I will resign immediately!  Phew, I am glad to avoid all that deserved scorn!!

The situation in question here is clearly laid out: an ending of K+Q  vs lone king. If you dont know when to resign this ending or even when you are only a few moves from being mated then you need to take up a different hobby. I have heard you are a pugilist and I think you have clearly been hit in the head too much. ( some may say not enough )

lol, you obviously don't know too many Australians, being an Australian and getting kicked out of an (not THE...there are more than one you know! lol) Australian group wouldn't surprise many here at all!  In fact many would consider it very Australian!LaughingCool

Plz, suggo, no need for that.

You need to be a man to admit that someone is better and to shake hands.

You need to be real ass to play last 20 moves with K vs K&Q and use last hour in game time and play for 2 more months while 500 people w8 for you to finish in tournament.

That simple. If you do not know when game is lost or won I can not help you.

Yeah Reb, you are right again!  People who are no good at the game should find another hobby!  I mean those out there that don't follow the etiquette as laid out by you deserve to be scorned by the elitist chess community!  We should have an exile rule!  Fancy not following your rules as to when to resign...and if they aren't clever enough to know when they should resign!!  SCORN SCORN SCORN!  What sort of chess community would this be if everyone respected the other players right to resign whenever they decide!! OMG!

Oh how awful of him!  Fancy playing out a game!  SCORN him with deserved SCORN I say!

You are loser Suggo. No one can tell you when to resign, but if you do not see that by yourself, you are lost in your stupidity and will never rise above it.

TheOldReb

Even half decent chess players dont play out such endings as K+Q vs K suggo.  Do you play out such an ending ? Matalino's opponent was over 2400 so one would surely NOT expect a player of this level to continue a game in such an ending !

Suggo

Generally I don't play out such an ending, but if I chose to do so it is well within my rights and NO, I don't then deserve any of your elitist scorn...and neither does that guy!SmileCool

That is the point. You HAVE every right to be an a**hole. No one can take that away from you. Well said.

And yet you want to admonish this fellow for not resigning when you think he should have! Interesting!

TheOldReb

Matalino, I feel your pain ! Just look at this game : http://www.chess.com/echess/game.html?id=13383856

So you join the ranks of those who wish to try and impose their ideals and behaviour upon others, how very sad.  Out of the people who play on and you two blokes, I know who I think if anyone deserves scorn, and it ain't the guys playing out their games!

Suggo this is not helpfull for your social life. Not even in virtual one like chess.com

TheOldReb

Stick to pugilism suggo, it suits you and you suit it.
