Well, I didn't do it with style or skill - my last four games have been poor accuracy, and my blundering, error-prone ways persist, but ...
... I finally surpassed my previous high rating, 796 on 7 July 2022. It was a goal I'd set for myself.
I am still very low skill, a far below average player, but I am better now than I used to be. In my first 23 games I had 10 wins and 13 losses, and lowest rating was 571. Things were pretty bad. But from there I won 22 games and lost 7, and my rating rose to 806.
It's a long road ahead to reaching just average ability, and to be honest I'm not sure I'll ever get there. When I see players rated 1000+ play it just blows my mind how they can see things, because I really can't. So, 806 may be where I'll be stuck for the rest of forever.
But I wanted to write a note to say thank you to all of the kind and helpful souls here who made it possible for me to get from 571 up to 806, and to reach my goal. The credit belong to each of you, because you did it - I didn't. The time you spent writing up detailed explanations and posting them have made all the difference, and I am very grateful. I never had any chess teachers or coaches before I came here, didn't know any principles or tactics, just nothing. Van Geet opening (didn't know its name back then,) and a pawn tsunami were all that I ever knew or thought of to do.
I am especially grateful to @kindaspongey, who reached out to me to help, unsolicited, and has been a tremendous teacher and source of educational content. @nklristic, who has the patience of Job, bearing with me through my exasperated rants and foolish errors to mentor me, and @Eyes1289, who never fails to share a kind and encouraging word, day after day. Arturo at support@chess.com and @Martin_Stahl have also played huge roles in helping me to learn and grow as a player and as a user/member of this site, and are sincerely appreciated.
I am probably leaving a lot of people out due to my failing memory - the NM whose name I can't remember who messaged me out of the blue to encourage me, all of the people who voiced their views in my Knights vs. Bishop thread (which was an epic help!) and many, many more folks here. Thank you - all of you - for getting me from where I was to where I am - I am very thankful for each of you, and for all of the time, energy, and effort you put in to help me improve. 🙏
Continue playing! I used to feel the same way, but one day I started to look for online videos on YouTube and improved a lot. Maybe it could help you too. I've reached 1200 in 5 months of playing and I'm sure you will achieve 1000 if you work hard.
