A way to improve a bad variation

There is a particular opening that I have mentioned a few times on this site, I have analysed it myself using the board editing tool on chessgames.com and it appears to be quite bad, although I'm not 100% sure as to how bad it is.

Here is my attempt to improve it. Notice the last move by black, Bd7, as a way to improve the problem.

How is white not just winning after Bxc6 and then f3?

In other words even 7...Bd7 is not a a saving grace.

Although I do not play e4 regularly, I do know that castling leads to the Berlin Endgame which is very drawish. Instead I would recommend 4.d3 as follows

The whole line with 6...d5? is extremely suspect, if not losing by force.
