So today marks the first year of playing since I was 13. That was 34 years ago and, being honest, we just knew how to move the pieces around and so had no tactical or strategical idea. My wife bought me a board last Christmas as I fancied one and have been addicted all year.
So what have I learnt?
1. It's a pretty damn frustrating game! I managed to climb to 750 rapid back in September but since , have fallen like a stone, even though I've been studying quite a bit and read a few books. I feel sharper, overall and more aware, yet currently I'm at 637 and haven't played much for a month due to a seriously back streak.
2. It's going to be a long process, but it's the kind of challenge that will keep me interested.
3. I have lots of books all of a sudden (and 4 different sets). Enough to keep me busy this year. I need strategy, which I'm now starting to read.
4. I probably need to play more and forget about silly mistakes. I'm analysing my games and players that are where I'd like to be (1000 is the realistic aim this year)
5. Signed up here a couple of months ago so have been playing lots of puzzles every day since. Finally hit 1800 last night, having been around 1750 all week but then carried on whilst tired and lost 200 points, just like that.
6. Perseverance is going to be key, but I get terribly annoyed when I blunder badly. This is the time to call it a night.
7. I've learned a little about how my concentration and 'sharpness' works. I'd have thought mornings were better for me, being more that way inclined, but not so great for chess it transpires!
7. Going back to 25 minute rapid, rather than 15 minute. I still need time to think.
8. I wish I had have continued when I was much younger, but hey ho, I'm realistic with my targets.
9. And finally, the best part is playing with my 8 year old. She's pretty sharp, hopefully she will continue to play (no pressure!)
And so, wishing everyone all the best in their pursuit of this fun, but challenging pastime through 2024.
