Hello everyone,

So, I am very new to chess and seem to always be at a disadvantage from the start, what's your recommendation for the first 5 or so moves? I have been trying different techniques but most seem to fail.  Thanks.

The opening that gives the best chance of winning is whatever opening you feel most comfortable and confident with.

You are looking for quick mates and traps. Play e4, Danish Gambit.

Try playing a universal opening, such as the Hippo. If you manage to close the position, you can usually get at least a draw.

Control the center by moving the pawn to e4 or d4 on the very first move.  Then get the knights and bishops out. Then castle.

I hope that this helps.

Many times in life, when a person is a beignner (in any skill, not just chess) they don't know which questions are useful... they sometimes ask questions whose answers don't matter, or questions that don't make sense.

This is a bad question for multiple reasons. First of all there is no best opening in chess. Second of all the opening is the most forgiving phase, so "good" openings don't matter as much as many other things. Third of all, a common pitfall for beginners is to focus on the opening.

A better question is "I often lose quickly, how do I play the first few moves?"

The answer to that is the opening principles.

Italian opening.

For a 600 rated player just follow opening principles. To get better solve tons of tactics puzzles. At your level  100% of your games will be decided by a tactic or a blunder. You need to focus on not blundering and taking advantage of your opponents blunders.
