Age that is too late to start chess
LOL... you can't start Chess at any age...
The flaw in your thinking is that your going to be a Grand Master. The other flaw in your thinking is GM's make a decent living playing chess.... MOST DO NOT! only the 1% make enough to play chess full time.
To be a GM you have to be born with the mental attributes.... PEROID!
Some level of photographic memory
A massive level of volume/space/geometry comprehension and then convert it to Chess vision
A deep discipline of the game... to be a GM requires deep mastery in all phases of the game.
and... last but not least... IRON NERVES. A personality that is resistant to the pressures of the game... that has the ability to never forget a loss, take it deeply personable, but at the same time cast it away.
It's never too late to start playing chess. The only limits are the ones you create for yourself. You can do anything you set your mind to player. Don't listen to nay sayers. Happy chess, 🙂♟️
I have a friend at my local club, and she started playing last year at the age of 73. She's getting better every week, and she's having a great time playing and learning from the rest of the club. I'm 74, started playing at 14, and am still about 1100. So what's the proper age? The age you are today. How far can you progress? Depends on how much time and effort you put in, but only you will know when the gains are no longer worth the time and effort expended. At that point, it's time to begin having fun. Doing puzzles, playing over master games, reading about the history and culture of chess, playing here on chess.com and on Lichess, etc. are all great ways to use your time and get the most out of the greatest of all games.
