Hi! My name is Lauren Goodkind and I’m a chess coach and chess YouTuber based in California:

You are actually doing fine, so keep up the good work!    When I first started in chess, I was rated in the 600s.  All good chess players were once a beginner too! I remember a boy who had a rating of 1200.  Eventually, he became a grandmaster.

If you want to get better in chess,

I have tips to help you improve your chess skills so you can win more games.

-I  offer a  free beginner’s free eBook on my website, www.ChessByLauren.com in case you are interested. The book is about asking questions before each move.

-Learn basic tactics such as the fork, discovered attack, pin, and more.  I offer interactive puzzles on my website: https://www.chessbylauren.com/two-choice-puzzles.php

-I recommend two books for you: “50 Poison Pieces”   and “Queen For A Day: The Girl’s Guide To Chess Mastery.”  Both books are available on Amazon.com.  Both books are endorsed by chess masters!

-If you are serious about chess, I highly recommend you hiring a chess coach to help you.

-Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side. Always as, “If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?”

I hope that this helps.

There's better and there's worse, but being "good" or "bad" depends on the point of view. A typical 500 wouldn't really see you as bad.

If you're working hard to improve, analyzing your games, reading articles, playing over master games, doing tactics, playing slow games, etc., and you're still around 600, then, yes, you may be bad at chess.
But consider me, for example. I am nearly 70 years old, have been playing chess since I was 14, do all the above-recommended things, and still have a rapid rating of about 1200+. Am I bad at chess? Well, the statistics would emphatically say YES!
But there's another component here--a huge one! Do you enjoy chess? Do you derive pleasure from playing the game, reading the articles, following the great players, watching YouTube videos, playing over the games of the great masters, solving puzzles, studying books, etc.? For me, the answer, again, is emphatically YES.
Too often we get obsessed with getting better and better and better. And, surely, we must do all we can to improve and stop playing like idiots. But we must also enjoy this greatest of games. Chess has given me untold hours of pleasure, relaxation, competition, mental stimulus, and fun. No matter my rating, I am glad to have had a lifetime of enjoyment. Focus on that.

Totally agree with what's written here.
If you're looking to improve and your current approach isn't working, try something else, just keep trying and eventually you will get better happy.png

For a beginner you are not bad. Keep up the good work & keep doing the lessons & tactics.

I’m 700 rated and have been playing for three months however you can definitely get better I am (through much practice) able to beat my friends at 950ish rating. Just because your rating is a little low doesn’t mean you are terrible
