are online ratings considered legit?

i ask because its been impossible for me to establish an otb rating for many months now due to all otb tournaments being suspended indefinitely, so playing and getting rated online seems to be the only option now in this day and age

I believe chess.com is about 100 - 150 pts under rated depending a the Time Control

lichess.org is about 400 pts over rated but the are using the Glicko rating system where OTB uses ELO system

what exactly do you mean when you say under rated?

Depends. I’m 1800 CFC, but 2000-2100 blitz depending on the day. Maybe I’m underrated, but I don’t really think so. Lichess is definitely overrated though, since I’m 2190-2200 on lichess

To be honest, online ratings doesn't mean sh*t.

It depends on what you mean by “legit.” It can affect what tournaments you can enter on the web site, and it gives you bragging rights with friends. Also, if you go to a club and say your rating, it will give them an idea of how well you play. It could also get you followers on twitch if it’s really high. So it’s not meaningless, but it doesn’t officially mean anything.
