We can improve our chess at any age, with guidance. I'm 60 and still learning. I am exactly halfway between beginner and GM. But to have any chance to ever get really good at it, you must beginning studying chess early, preferably while still in the womb.
Are there other old beginners here?

How long have you been playing, Iron-Toad?

I'm 61, and I've been playing chess since I was a teenager. I was most active in my 20's and 30's, competing in over 50 USCF-rated tournaments. I haven't played that seriously in years, but I imagine I would still be a "B-player" (a few notches below expert).

Your not even old enough to remember Fischer mania, don't concern yourself with age I'm, 62 and got back into chess about 2 years ago , chess is a lot more fun and easier to improve these days .unless you have Grandmaster ambitions or want to compete in high level chess ,age is irrelevant I'm having a great time exploring the chess culture that I've missed (just have to stop buying the darn books, their really starting to add up )
With youtube and the internet why buy books? Too hard to follow manually

Apart from showing off your immense chess library to visitors and giving the impression you're a retired grand-master, you can improve visualization and calculation from following those books that only show a diagram every 5 - 10 moves.

Im 5 . . .. .... Im in my 50s and have also always known how to move the pieces and have played friends who also didnt play, but just started playing more seriously 2 weeks ago.

I started playing actively two months ago. I am 52 years old.
I'm in your shoes except I'm 66. I learned the game as a child but never any tactics. I received a friend request after I started posting on the forums, logical enough. I've started my first online game against someone I don't know.
My level is 670; my opponent, 1670. I'm very new but this should be a fascinating game.

It was later nominated (by at least three people) for chess.com's $2000 Immortal Game contest!
Amazing work!
