Ifpatriot, I'm curious to know what you were rated in the first year or two of playing,.

I never had a rating then. I was probably about 8 years old. My dad knew how to play and he taught me. It wasn't until grade school that they found out I knew how to play chess and wanted me to play on the school team. By then I was a lot better, about 1500.

That was kind of fun. I played a few local non school tournaments and my rating got up to the mid 1700s. But I thought it was kind of silly that all these old people would sit for hours on end staring at the board, trying as hard as they can just to win. That did not look very enjoyable. So I started playing more socially and stopped playing in any tournaments.

I feel like I'm quite a bit better now, but over the years maybe not as much as I think. Almost everyone in our family plays, so that's fun. And a few friends play but wine is mandatory.

So it's all about enjoying it. I know some people enjoy playing seriously and if that's what they want to do, they should. But that just wasn't for me. I quickly realized 1700 is great for casual games, but completely worthless for tournament play.

Sometimes when we play we just set up random pieces on the board and start from there. Not a puzzle or anything like that, just random pieces. It's a social game, so whatever makes it fun is all that matters.

The promise of a gold membership as a bait for attention is something extremely pathetic, but the "Ok, no gold membership for you, sorry" as an attempt to invalid someone's answer is something even beyond pathetic.

You already had plenty of reasonable answers, you don't like them? you want to be a little attention seeker a bit longer?

Quit the game and do something else then, I guarantee you nobody cares.

You pretty much nailed it.  That's all this was.  And, starting a second account here to troll with was part of the deal.  Stuff like this works mostly because as a rule, most folks are more than willing to help others improve.  Then I suppose the troll gets some twisted satisfaction from seeing people do so, probably not realizing that even if it doesn't help the troll, it's likely to help someone else so they still offer answers.  They're not typing in order to get a membership they already have, they're just participating in a discussion.

It's more fun than playing chess

Yeah, time to un-follow this thread, which is getting sillier and sillier. I'm convinced that the OP was just trolling.

You can always get away with calling yourself a learner. The moment you stop acknowledging that you still have things to learn is the point you become consumed by your own arrogance and hubris.

don't keep this conversation alive the OP and this one are both trolls accounts, they had a similar username (jaggaboar and mightyjaggy), both new accounts, both from great britain, both talking nonsense... now they both changed the username (what a coincidence) and the OP has closed the account, what a surprise.... i strongly suggest to not feed the troll anymore, it's only a waste of time...

he was cheeky even if he had not closed his account. he was making us give brilliant reasons to quit chess, so we would read those, get influenced and quit chess, quitting chess.com and he wont have to give the membership to anyone commenting on this thread. =)

Btw the secondary account who was backing up the OP in this trolling, is banned and his messages are deleted... Props to chess.com for intervening so quickly thumbup.png the IP recognition works!

Games like chess are beneficial to cognitive performance so if you are just in it for winning and nothing else it says a bit more about your character, in my opinion. Sharpness, memory and concentration can go way beyond the benefits on one upmanship, so try and look at the bigger picture.

Any time will do, for a year or two then come back and improve.

"At what point should someone quit chess?"

Immediately after their first experience of reading the word "bruh" on a Chess.com forum.

Far too grown-up for Chess.com forums.
