Check out John Bartholomew's Chess Fundamentals Series on you tube. There are 6 videos. He has one specifically on evaluating trades and another on pawn structures. They're very good. And just in case it hasn't been said enough...play slow time controls. Fast is for fun, but go slow to improve. It will give you more time to think of a plan for the position, spot tactics, calculate, and generally think. This will speed up as you become more experienced.
