Battle of the Two Chess Armies

The white army approached the battlefield and set up for the battle, eager to follow their King into battle and defend their country against the black army. All were dressed in their finest battle outfits . . .

The black army set up normally also. The black army had conquered the land around the White Kings domain. They were dressed in worn outfits since the had just been in many skirmishes.

On this field of battle, Black King said to his Bishop. “This will be White's final stand.”

The White King looked down from his stead at his trusted King’s pawn and said, "Take your squad up to the center and contain the ground for us."

"Just as you command Sire." The e-pawn leaps into the action leading his men to occupy the area . . .

  1. 1.e4

The Black King sees the movement and to his pawn leader said, "They're trying to take the center of the battlefield, Take your men and position yourself to meet the challenge"

"So it will be done, your majesty," and he signals his men to move forward to,

  1. . . . .  e5.
  1. Nf3 The White Knight being the bravest is signaled by the king to attack and to join the battle. He leaped attacking black's lone advanced pawns group on e5 . . .
  2. . . .  Nc6.   The fierce Black's Knight sees the pawns in distress and comes to their aid . . .
  3. Bb5  Without being told the White's Bishop launches himself at the defending knight, enticing him to move or be cut down . . . "On guard."
  4. . . .  Nd4.With a horse's whiney, the Black Knight leaps into no man’s land and attacks both the White Knight on f3 and threatens to take the Bishop from the side at b5 . . .
  1. Nxd4Bound by chivalry, the White Knight sacrifices himself to save the bishop and takes the Black Knight with his lance.
  2. ... exd4.The black pawn immediately attacks the White Knight taking him down. The White Knight thudding onto the ground as the horse gallops away. From afar the White Bishop sees the mortal attack and says a prayer for the Knight, for his service to the White King and defending him . . .
  3. Qf3White's strong Queen moved to f3, ready to avenge the White Knight death, threatening the pawn on “f7,” from afar . . .
  4. ... a6. Signaled by the Castle on a8, the pawn moves forward and attacks the White's Bishop from the side . . .

  1. Bc4  The White Bishop moves instead of tangling with the pawn. The Bishop retreats and repositions himself, in a better place, threatening f7 black pawn and assisting the White Queen to checkmate the Black King . . .
  2. ... D6.  The Black King orders his Knight out to protect him, but mistakenly the signal is given to the d-pawn to move forward only half way, bad blunder . . .
  3. Qxf7#The White Queen seeing that the bishop's attack on the “f” pawn wasn't blocked made her move taking the bishop’s pawn next to the Black King check mating him. The queen looked back to her King saying, "For you my love" . . .
  4. ... Kxf7.  The black king with a smirk on his face tried to slayed the White Queen, but it was an illegal move. For the White Queen is protected by the Bishop from far away on C4. . . Three ways to stop the attack are.

1st. Block the attack: There was no way to block the attack so . . .

2nd. Take the attacker: The Black King looked for someone else of his army to take the queen, but there was nobody . . .

3rd. Run away: His last resort was to run away, but all of the locations he could run to were protected by the White Queen.

The Black King laid down his sword and surrendered to the White Queen . . .

The white army regrouped and joined their White King at their castle for a happy celebration . . .

I know that you read it. But did you like the structure of the story?

give it to my young beginning students. It makes it easy for them to remember how to do it.

Then I show the how to stop from being mated in just a few moves.

When the White bishop goes to C4 on the second move, it is aiming to F7. That is the weak pawn only protected by the king.

Blacks second move should be NF6. That stops the White queen moving to H6 and then QxF7# mate. It also makes the move Qf3 useless and stops the mate also.

That move also attacks the white pawn on E4. Black should also move the Black Bishop on F8 and Castle to safeguard the king.

I have been looking at games by lower rating players and they don't seem to castle very often.

If the center is blocked with pawns then it's safe for the king to be left in the middle, but if the center is open, you're better off castling. You will last longer and might get a win.

Nice! I already knew those tactics, but the story was entertaining. One note though. One of the diagrams is missing the a7 pawn

This is too complicated......! 😱

@ JDH1

I KNEW it was missing but didn't know how to put it back . . .
