Hey guys! I’m brand new, fresh in the packaging with chess. I’m going through my lessons as the days go by, playing against the computer and reading various bits and pieces. There’s a lot of chess videos online but what are the best for starting out? Lastly, what helped YOU when getting in to chess? I’m super excited as this is all new! Have a lovely Christmas everyone, tia. 🎄

I would honestly say, watch GothamChess or Hikaru videos. I find GothamChess fairly instructive. Find a strategy that works for you or that you seem to like, and test them on bots to learn different variations and how the game plays.

I would start with two simple things:

1.  Learn opening principles (this video is worth 8 minutes of your time - Chess Basics: Opening Principles)

2.  Then begin to learn basic tactics.  Mostly, you just need experience at the beginning -- experience seeing the board so you don't hang your pieces all over the place.

3.  Play slow games (30 minutes or more) so  you have time to see the board.

Lots more to do, but if you are as much of a newbie as you explained you were, the above three will take a while.  Check back in and tell us how it's going!

Learn a few openings for white and black (youtube is a good place)

Review games you've played with an engine and let it tell you what you did wrong.

Learn checkmating patterns. (Books are best for this)

Do puzzles. (Books or chesstempo.com are best)
