Bird Opening

Well I don’t know why so many people think the Bird is bad since you can play it like a setup (f4, e3, Nf3, Be2, O-O, b3, Bb2, Nc3) and it complies with all the opening principles

Bird is fine. Don't listen to all the people who says that other openings than their own is bad.

I play the Dutch as black. Not to keen on playing Bird as white. But I also don't play the English as white when I play the Sicilian as black. It is more because I don't want to transpose to d4 games in the English or the Kings gambit in the Bird. I am an e4 player who has way to much theory to keep up with. King's gambit isn't my cup of tea and d4 has to many games I am not interested in. Just the way my prep has worked out for me. Asymetric positions are what I use for black. For white with the first move I prefer to take the initiative with a central thrust.

Bird is not so great. Mostly because your pieces don't find active squares. Be2 is not a square that your bishop is very happy at. It also doesn't fight for the center hard enough. Your setup is also not always reachable: after 1. f4, black can play 1. ... g6. Your dark squared bishop will never find the long diagonal.

Thanks to everyone and edit: I don’t play it, I just tried it against a bot and won

It's only real advantage is when your opponent does badly against openings they don't face often. I tried reading Timothy Taylor's book on the Bird but in the first two chapters, he goes this is what Black should play to prevent our ideal setup but this is what happens when they don't do that. Not exactly helping when it comes to showing off how great an opening is.

King's Gambit would be a better option to consider and it would be more fun to learn than having a passive Dutch setup

Bird Opening is good. It is certainly better than King's Gambit. 1 f4 e5? fxe5 is good for white, a central pawn up. It makes sense to play Bird Opening as white if you play Dutch as black. That allows you to double profit from your experience with the resulting positions.

"... a passive Dutch setup"

This is one of the nice misunderstandings that make it fun to play Dutch/Bird. It is by no way passive. It can be hyper aggressive. That is why people like Larsen and GingerGm played/plays it.

Ulf Andersson once made a legendary comment about a game which started with 1.f4: "Black is already slightly better!"

Let's just say you are trying to get Dutch Defense with an extra tempo tongue.png just like 1.c4 e5 is Sicilian Defense with an extra tempo.

Judging by your rating, I recommend not worrying about the openings and focusing on tactics.

I would be a little concerned over the opening as they give you the starting point. The Dutch is good but not great and the Bird is not even a tricky opening to play against as long as you play ...d5, ...g6, and ...c5.

Of course, the tactics are the deciding factor as I am good with the opening but fall against tactics but the opening does help slightly
