Blitz/rapid rating balance

Is it normal to have a much lower blitz rating than your rapid rating? Say I am a 1000 rapid player but really struggle at 400 blitz (5|0) rating. Does it mean I need to play more fast games to improve, say until I reach 700?

You’re blitz rating is much less than rapid. So yes it’s normal. What would make you think any differently?

I just thought it's normal to have similar ratings across different time controls. I was expecting some struggles because I am usually the player under time pressure in rapid games, win or lose. But it is shocking to me how much worse I am playing than most people when I can't think for a minute between moves.

I see people suggest slow games to beginners a lot. I understand but at the same time I cant always use twice as long on the clock as everyone else. It would be like playing with a handicap. So maybe I just need more games so I can be more 'automatic' in common positions?

You are likely just not used to the time pressure. Blitz games are more about intuition and pattern recognition than actual calculation. With time and experience you will improve at faster games.

I am on a roll in rapid but these 350 blitz players are way too strong for me. What's wrong???

Well I either make simple blunders or I spend too much time to blunder check that I lose on time.

So I swapped from 5|0 to 3|2 games and weirdly enough I won a bunch of games in a row, despite the pacing being even faster.
