blitz vs rapid

Hi all,
I’m writing for asking your opinion. I started playing online chess in jan 2021 focusing on rapid and now I’m about 1100. For me this is fine becuase I know I need to improve a lot and playing is funny.
Recently I started also playing blitz because normally I dont have enough time for staying 1 hour in fornt of the screen and I need something more fast.
After lots of games I’m still about 500/600 and I cannot find a way for improve my skill in blitz. This is sometime frustrating because I blunder a lot or lose on time.
Whats your opinion? Do you feel the same? Any advice?

Im in kind of the same situation but its mostly due to rapid giving you more time to think and because you are inexperienced that gives you a considerable advantage compared to blitz or even worse bullet

Wow, that's an impressive result for rapid, I've been playing since February and still am around 500-550 in rapid, what would you recommend to improve?

BiggestPie

start with 5 min games they are the most similar to rapid then when thats feels good go to 4 then 3

Ignore blitz and focus on rapid instead.

Rapid is much better for improving than blitz(And bullet).

Keep playing rapid(Preferably 15+10) and you will get better in blitz too.

I hope this help.

@Peeboh what you are saying makes sense, you need more time to think because you don't quite know the patterns. Like for example, when I see two pieces separated by one square, and I'm ready to push a pawn where it hits both of them I play it right away I know the pattern. Maybe an inexperienced player would need to calculate the captures and evaluate that this is winning.

Rapid is much better recommended for novices, so if you don't have the time for 30 minutes per game, maybe do 10 minutes, doesn't take much time and you do have the time to think, and at the same time manage your time so it's 3 plusses

10min games last at most around 20mins, maybe try that.

I used to play long time ago but I never playied so frequenterly like know. 2m ago I was about 750/800 then I decide to watch some lesson, play the puzzles and apply some standard tips (simple like counting every time before take a piece). Then in 2m I reached 1100. Now I’m stable and I know I need time for improving more

IMHO, the only value in learning in blitz is testing out your opening theory knowledge.  To see if you know your lines.

Blitz is more video game and less chess.

Yes I agree but I dont understand why there is so much difference. And also less time for me should means less time for my opponent isnt it?

chamo2074

Yes of course, less time for your opponent as well, but to improve you'll need to figure out the plans and the calculation. Intuition alone won't help in early stahes

Yes ok. In fact I started play blitz because it is funny to have several matchs in short timeframe but after lot of games it is annoying that I continue to lose blundering my position

chamo2074

Yeah understandable.

Maybe if you really need to play blitz practice tactics a lot and watch a lot of analysis of wild games and sacrifices it will improve your intuition

I agree with you both, well said.

I use blitz and even bullet to exclusively experiment. Learn how to laugh at yourself as well.

I get bored playing against the bots and plus, there is nothing like playing against a real person at a rated game. I am not a fan of unrated games.

Rapid is best when you’re beginning, then slowly decrease your time rating
