Strategy is more important to focus on once we stop hanging full peices. But yasser has a bunch of stratagy books, judith polgar has a handfull. Read the reviews see what you like. Havent got into any myself im still trying to not hang peices and work on endgames.

Hi,

Soviet Chess Primer would be my recommendation. You can pick it up on Amazon for $19 I believe, but check reviews before deciding to purchase! happy.png

re "Soviet Chess Primer" - Though it begins by treating elementary concepts, it is a relatively advanced book which quickly becomes challenging for the beginner-novice.  It is therefore more suitable for the experienced, intermediate player and above.

online chess training is aplenty.

I've been reading "Pandolfini's Ultimate Guide To Chess". It's easy reading and understandable. You don't need a chess board in front of you to follow what's going on.

I got it on Amazon.

++ A rating of 800 is a sign of frequent blunders. Always check your intended move is no blunder before you play it. Hang no pieces, hang no pawns and you are 1500.

"studying tactics isn't helping me improve" ++ Why not? It should.

"I am looking for good books on strategy for beginners"
++ If tactics do not help you, then strategy will help you even less.

"does anyone have recommendations?" ++ "Chess Fundamentals" - Capablanca

Do even more tactics … You really gotta commit to them. Don’t just do a tactical problem, then move on right away to the next one. Learn from your mistakes on tactics problems by using the engine to see where you missed any “hidden” moves you or the computer had, that you failed to see when you got the incorrect answer. After all of that, make sure you can clearly visualize the main line answer and all of the sidelines from the starting position. Then go on to the next problem.

Analyze your games … find your big and medium mistakes with an engine, if those are not already obvious to you the moment you made your move and/or your opponent responded.

Smaller mistakes, if applicable … probably best to collect a bunch of your serious games and then later get a coach to help explain things to you if you have the money. The one issue I had with this is that I made many blunders, so none of my “analysis” mattered until I was getting into the Middlegame with a relatively even position. Also, I collected games and it was obvious that my knowledge changed over the course of months, etc, so older games of yours may not be as accurate an indicator of where you are compared to more recent games.

Strategy books for lower levels …
-Weapons of Chess by Pandolfini.
-Complete Guide to Chess Strategy by Silman.
-Discovering Chess Openings by Emms

None of these books will improve your playing strength, however. More for your own information, learning the lingo of chess, and for fun when you are tired of problem-solving and analyzing (which is how you will improve your playing strength).

-I highly recommend “Queen For A Day: The Girl’s Guide To Chess Mastery.” which is written for beginners.  Readers get to play an entire chess game with Sophia, who is a beginner  fictional chess player.  You will learn winning strategies, such as controlling the center and more!   This book  is available on Amazon.com.  This book is also endorsed by chess masters!
