So I've been playing chess for a week.

No premium.

Just playing against bots.

I want to start reading books about chess and have them by my side during games so I can read them over. Any good recommendations?

Don't play bots! Play people. Get over your fear of losing. Improving getting out there and doing your best.

The Mammoth Book of Chess by Graham Burgess is good - it covers all aspects of the game, tactics, combinations, openings (general principles) ,  and good coverage of often played openings (i.e. what the aim of the openings are), plenty of advice - it is a well thought of book.

Also think of a good book of annotated games that you can go through, try to guess the next move, and then read the explanation of why moves were made: Logical Chess - Irving Chernev, Understanding Chess Move by Move - John Nunn, My Thousand Most Sound Defeats and Embarrassments - Crocodilestyle1 <- any of those great titles.

The Complete Idiots Guide to Chess is an excellent book for beginners and intermediate players. Don't be bothered by the title.
