reading Savage chess opening traps, but have no idea what .... means in his moves. for example 1. e4 e5 2. d4 .... 2. .... exd4 3. Qxd4 .... 3. .... Nc6 what do the ...... mean?

it's algebraic notation. A quick internet search will show you.

It seems to me to be the same as 1 e4 e5 2 d4 exd4 3 Qxd4 Nc6. Was it perhaps like this?

1. e4 e5

2. d4 ….

[Comment on 2 d4.]

2. … exd4

3. Qxd4 ….

[Comment on 3 Qxd4.]

3. … Nc6

If so, "...." is just a signal that there is to be a comment before going on to Black's move. "3. … Nc6" is a standard way of indicating that Nc6 was Black's 3rd move.
