Not surprising. To go from beginner to advanced in a week is very depressing. That's just too long. Had he done it in 2 days I'm sure he would have been much more motivated. Hopefully when he comes back he'll do better.

That's great. Going from 900 to 1800 in one week is impressive. Given that rate of improvement 2000 by next week should be pretty easy. But I would set aside an additional month after that to reach 2400. Probably at least 2 months after that to reach GM. Realistically you will not be able to qualify for the world championship until next year though.
