My favorite variation of the C-K is the Korchnoi Variation, also known as the Tartakower Variation (I don't know how it came to be known by two names.). This is a counter-attacking variation which has recently become popular at very high levels. In my view it is much more interesting (exciting!?) than many of the, shall we say,‘conservative’ variations that the C-K is historically known for. Nevertheless, the C-K is one of the best defenses against 1.e4 in my view, regardless of the variation chosen, whether super solid or aggressive like the Korchnoi/Tartakower Variation.
Several excellent books on the Caro-Kann…
"Win With The Caro-Kann" by Sverre Johnsen & T.R. Hansen. This is a complete repertoire in the Caro-Kann defense to 1.e4. Also the repertoire book "Playing The Caro-Kann" by Lars Schandorff. Both of the books provide extensive coverage of the aggressive Classical - Korchnoi (also known as the Tartakower) Variation - 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nf6 5.Nxf6 exf6 - which should appeal to players preferring dynamic counterplay as Black. For a Caro-Kann repertoire that features the fashionable, solid main-line Classical - Capablanca Variation - 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5 - see “Grandmaster Repertoire 7: The Caro-Kann" by Lars Schandorf. To be clear, in addition to the aforementioned lines, all of these books address all of the major replies/variations by White to the Caro-Kann.
If you are interested in or curious about the Korchnion/Tartakower Variation, here are a few instructive video introductions on that line. The first video by Gambit Publications, is a review of Sverre Johnsen's book on the C-K (above); the well-known GM John Nunn is doing the review…

Note at of the video he begins discussion of the Classical Variation ( c6 d5 3.Nc3), which can lead to several sub-variations; in particular, the Korchnoi Variation (aka the Tartakower V., as he refers to it in the video) beginning @ - which is my favorite variation for Black, when White plays the Classical Variation (with either 3.Nc3 or 3.Nd2)...

Are there any simple traps in the caro-kann? I like to use it but I don't know about any extra tricks I could be using, if there are any.
