Chatting during games

If its casual for fun OTB then yes. Its part of the fun.Â
Online? Somehow that became a sign of being a poor sport, distraction, and just being irritating.Â
So take it for what it is.

I'll often post a comment when I blunder, making fun of myself, and will chat if other person responds. But I play long time controls so it's not a deal. I think much more interesting if there is some interaction, but I'm in the minority on that one.

There was a time when people would chat during online games. But at some point, something happened and became frowned upon. I had someone tell once that they dont chat online because it makes them appear "weak". I guess its like someone slamming down the chess pieces to appear "aggressive". Neither makes sense except online.

During a rated tournament game then i get no chatting. But playing for fun? Conversing is half the enjoyment. Our chess club just opened back up so i can get back into casual play and seeing people i haven't seen for over a year.

I do the usual gg, ggs, thanks for the games, gl, good luck. Other than that, it is pretty silent. Opponents try to chat me up when I am low on time, which I find a little bothersome.
The game is supposed to be sportsmanlike, not a WWE match.

I always say hello and good luck at the start and will happily engage in conversation if the player is willing. However i won't start a conversation after that if all i get is, you too or thanks.
However i do always compliment a good move i've missed.
On this site, I'm too focused on the board to pay attention that somebody is chatting. I only notice when somebody is chatting until after the game.
Now people are mostly charming and funny.
Also I like to send out a 'good game' from time to time because no matter how competitive I get its still a game.
i rlly enjoy chatting while playing, if i have time on the clock and the other person its respectful i dont find a reason to dont reply. sometimes I can even learn new things depending of my oponent
I have the chat off during live games. When I play chess, I want to play chess. When I want to socialize with strangers, I come here.

You will find some who like to chat, and some who don't want any part of it. The people who don't respond or who disable chat aren't necessarily bad people; they just choose to concentrate on the chess itself instead. But there is no harm in saying hi and seeing if your opponent responds. I have had some really good conversations and made some friends that way.
In official tournament games, usually the practice is not to chat. But many of the games we play on here are just for fun.
