Not really. There's some truth to this though. You'll ideally want all of your pieces to control the center squares (d4, d5, e4, e5) and this is especially true for the minor pieces, but you'll not necessarily want them occupying those squares. There's also times where you may shift to the flanks for strategic reasons, but the general concept of the center being very important is true.
Don't waste your time "memorizing" opening lines. You have to know why you are playing a move, If you are playing moves just because someone else says it is good will lead you to positions you don't understand. This is not chess.
