I'm just getting started on chess.com, and it's been years since I've played chess. How do I locate opponents that are in the ballpark of my skill level? I don't want to waste an expert's time playing me, nor do I want to slaughter someone brand new to chess.

In your settings you can set your ratings limits for both Daily Chess and Live Chess.

Wouldn’t worry about it too much. The rating system will adjust very fast.
