If its a mate in 1, there is nothing you can do about it.
Yeah, I was meaning puzzles that set up a mate-in-1 threat... So scholars mate for example, the analysis would show an equal game, so there's technically no "mate in 1" on the board, but there's a very obvious mate-in-1 threat on the board, that, if black makes a nothing move, results in a loss.
In many tactical puzzles, you are playing as the attacking side, and I feel as a beginner it is easier to spot a mate in 1, when they are the attacker than if the exact same position was on the board, but they were the defender.
Do any puzzles exist where you are the defender, and have to spot a mate in 1 threat and do something about it? Ideally aimed at the 600-1000 rating range. I fluctuate between 1900 and 2100 on tactics and I occasionally get defensive themes (perceptual checks and so on) but I dont remember ever seen basic defensive themes for sub 1000, like not hanging a piece, or not blundering mate in 1 or 2.
I know by virtue of learning how to carry out tactics and threats from the attacking side, it should help you look out for threats when you face them as the defender, but a few dedicated and low rated defensive puzzles would be good to play with.
I'm trying to help a 600 rated colleague at the moment who is prone to blundering mate-in-1 threats, etc. Do some exist on here that I can just filter directly on? or another website?
