Does it seem like online chess is more difficult than OTB?

I play chess for fun, not competitively. When I play with my family, sometimes I win, sometimes I lose. But I enjoy it. However when I play on my phone it’s a different story. I don’t seem to play as well and I lose pretty darn quick. Any advice?

You have only played 5 games here. It seems likely that your rating is still too high.

If you keep trying, you will likely soon fine players at your level.

I’m the same mate.. There are some proper Chess sharks on this site man.. Playing way higher than their “ELO” suggests.. You’ll likely lose more than you win I can almost guarantee that.. The level of competition on here is ridiculous. That’s been my experience the last 9 months anyway.. It takes frustration to the next level..

You have played 2500 games. The original poster had only played 5.

That's how people gain Elo, go against people....

Your OTB playmates aren't playing competitive. If you want to rise in Online ranking, play as if you bet some money. Playing for pure fun and killing time is okay.

I find playing OTB to have a better atmosphere for playing chess. I tend to play better and have more fun.

Getting used to the "No takebacks!" rule is hard for some people.

I don't play takebacks in otb either

Also apparently losing by abandonment is a thing. I was literally about to move 💀

Looking at your games here, you're dropping pieces. What happens on otb, we don't know.

There are two types of OTB, one is the kind you participate in with friends and family for fun and entertainment. The other is participating in a rated tournament, with a clock and notation sheet, against someone whom you do not know, making or avoiding eye contact, and either being humbled and learning from that experience or feeling the jubilation of a well, hard fought victory. I've done both, and a rataed tournament is so much more challenging.

Yes, I have looked at my games and that has been a problem. I changed the timer from 10 to 15 and that helped, but I took so long to think about my move that I got booted😅

Have you REALLY played OTB against normal chessplayers? It does not seem to be the case.

And 15 mins each player is in the "fast chess" category for OTB games.

No. As I said I’ve only played OTB with family and a few friends. Never competitively, never in a tourney. As far as I know, I just gotta play more if I’m gonna get better!

Finding a good vibe of music rhythm while at it for focus does help, though I'm presently living on the street, so it's also to remove as best as possible distractions. 😂
