en passant capture

Hello!

I'm an absolute beginner and although I know the rules of chess, there is a particular case that made me doubt if a certain move is legal or not. Let's say white has two pawns on e4 and e5, black to move. Black moves d5. The pawn on d5 can be captured en passant by the pawn on e5. Can it also be captured by the pawn on e4? I would say that both moves are legal. Since each case would result in different positions, this could make a big difference.

Thanks!

Yes, in your example both exd6 en passent capture and exd5 regular capture would be legal.

Thank you !!

I also have a question about the algebraic notation in this scenario. I read in a tutorial (link below, under "Moving and Capturing") that the en passant capture of my example would be written e5xd5 even if the landing square of the white pawn is d6.

e5xd5 for the en passant capture instead of exd5, and the regular capture e4xd5. This is my guess ...

In your example, the move would be recorded as exd6 (or e5xd6), not as exd5.
